The tracks in Gaborone, Botswana, provided the backdrop for one of the most exciting expeditions in recent years for Swiss athletics. At the 2026 World Athletics Relays, the Swiss team confirmed its place among the world’s elite in relay racing, bringing home historic results and important assurances for the future.
The men’s 4x400m rewrites history

The feat that left everyone speechless was undoubtedly that of the men’s 4x400m relay. In a race run with courage and impeccable pacing, the Swiss quartet, comprising Vincent Gendre, Lionel Spitz, Julien Bonvin and Dany Brand, stopped the clock at 3:01.18.
This time is not only an outstanding performance, but also sets a new Swiss national record, breaking a mark that had stood since 1999. Seeing our athletes compete head-to-head with the world’s top milers is tangible proof of the technical level our sprinting sector has reached.
Beijing target achieved for the mixed 4x100m relay

There is also excellent news from the mixed 4x100m relay. Nora Güntert, Ajla Del Ponte, Felix Svensson and Salomé Kora demonstrated perfect coordination at the baton changes and impressive speed. Thanks to a rock-solid performance, they have secured Switzerland a direct place at the 2027 World Championships in Beijing.
Qualifying so far in advance will allow this team to train with peace of mind and precision, aiming for even more ambitious goals over the next two years.
Women’s 4x100m: the challenge continues

There was also room for a touch of sporting tension in the women’s 4x100m. Our girls came within a whisker of securing direct qualification, missing out by an incredible margin of just two hundredths of a second.
Despite the understandable disappointment of the moment, the situation remains well under control: thanks to their excellent position in the world rankings, the road to Beijing remains open. Knowing the determination and team spirit of this group, we are certain that this minor ‘setback’ will turn into further motivation for the upcoming events of the season.

The excitement of the World Relays is, however, just a taste of what we will experience this summer. Many of these international stars and the pillars of our relay teams will be the stars of GalAthletics in Bellinzona on 30 August.
It will be a unique opportunity to welcome national record-holders and Swiss champions to the Stadio Comunale, to celebrate their successes together and enjoy the spectacle of top-class athletics live.
